One More Reason to Love Philly: The Knight Arts Challenge
If you’re looking to move to a place that embraces the arts, consider Philly. Philadelphia is home to a rich community of artists and other creative types, and the city takes good care of its creative class. In fact, for the past two years, an organization called the Knight Foundation has provided $5.4 million dollars in funding to local artists. Local artists compete in what’s called the Knight Arts Challenge. 35 winners are selected each year to receive funding from the Knight Arts Challenge. This year, the winners of the Knight Arts Challenge will receive $2.76 million in funding to help them spearhead art projects that will enrich the lives of Philadelphia residents.
More than 1,260 local artists entered the challenge, and the winners reflect Philadelphia’s diverse range of creative talent. This year, new installations, community art projects, theatrical performances, film festivals, music and art programs for youth, and much more will be partially and generously funded by the Knight Foundation.
The Knight Arts Challenge started in Miami in 2008, and Miami and Philadelphia are currently the only two cities in the U.S. that host versions of the Knight Arts Challenge. Part of the mission of the Knight Arts Challenge is to help “transform communities through art” and “celebrate a community’s diversity.” This year, we can expect that Philadelphia will be both changed and enriched by the diverse art that stems from the Knight Arts Challenge.
Across the nation, funding for the arts has been dramatically cut due to the recession. The fact that the arts are still thriving in Philadelphia thanks to organizations like the Knight Foundation is just one more reason to love Philly.
