The Feel:
Bustling, Urban, Happening
Neighborhood Links: http://www.chinatown-pcdc.org/
Chinatown is a predominantly Asian American neighborhood and while similar to any "Chinatown” it has a distinctly Philadelphian architecture and cultural character. The Chinatown Friendship Gate, the first authentically created gate in the USA, located at 10th and Arch Street, is an internationally known landmark and a symbol of cultural exchange and friendship between Philadelphia and its Sister City, Tianjin, China. Chinatown is home to Philly Favorite Reading Terminal Market and the newly expanded Convention Center.

Center City’s Revitalization through the Last 20 Years
There’s an article on Philly.com about the Center City District and the revitalization of the city since they started 20 years ago today. Center City has been transformed into a much cleaner, safer, and more attractive city over the last 2 decades.
Serious crimes have been reduced by half over that time period and car burglaries have reduced by ¾. There has been a 95% increase in hotel rooms, the Pennsylvania Convention Center just doubled in size, and there are now 213 outdoor cafes and 328% more fine dining establishments.
Center City has attracted new residents, students, and visitors despite the economic recession. The population has increased 26% to 93,000 and residents with a college level education have increased 27%. 63% of residents walk, bike, or take mass transit to work. Education and health-care institutions have been tremendous with adding jobs and attracting grant money. It really has become a fantastic place to live.

High End Apartments to be Transformed from Gutted Building
The old Goldtex textiles factory on 12th st between Vine and Callowhill streets in Chinatown, is one of more than 40,000 vacant or abandoned properties in Philadelphia. It has been bought by Mike and Matt Pestronk, two brothers who own Post Brothers Apartments. They plan to gut and renovate the building into 160 upscale rental apartments. Workers have already begun ridding the building of squatters who have claimed the property in the last few years. Construction is expected to begin in 6 months with the goal of opening in 2 years.

Market St. Transformation??

Tomorrow afternoon city planners will be considering a proposal to allow bright flashing signs around The Gallery at Market East. The plan would be to transform that section of Market St into a shopping district that would somewhat resemble Times Square in New York. They hope that a change such as this could make the area more attractive to shoppers at night and raise cash for building improvements in the area.

More People Moving Into Philly Than Out
According to a new report, since 1993 the rate of people moving into Philadelphia has steadily increased while the rate of people leaving has dwindled. This report was released on Wednesday by the Pew Charitable Trusts’ Philadelphia Research Initiative, based on IRS data.
The number of people moving into the city has steadily increased from 31,837 in 1993 to 52,096 in 2008. Population growth in Philadelphia is due to a greater number of births than deaths and an increase of immigrants and empty nesters moving from the suburbs to the city.
These trends point to a reversal of long-term decline in the city’s population. For six decades people generally fled Philadelphia for the surrounding suburbs.
